Comment: I think we should keep in remembrance that the Holy Bible is to be read literally. It is not difficult to spiritualize the Word of God even though it is Spirit filled and written. The tendency by many is to humanly spiritualize vice allowing God the Holy Spirit to guide. We will get more into this as we travel through the Psalms. Also while on the subject of understanding the Word of God, it is also dangerous to “allegorize” scripture. Another danger is “figurative language”. This does not mean that the Holy Bible does not contain allegories and metaphors, it does; but these are self-evident in the context of God’s literal Words. Yet it would also be wrong if we were literally to literal, so what is the answer? John 16:5-15 see (13) thus it is and always will be FAITH in God’s GRACE in the Church age.

Devotional: Psalm 56:7 – Sin is a trap and David the psalmist understands this so he is not asking God this question in doubt “Shall they escape by iniquity?” David walked in the Light of God by faith, he is simply agreeing with God that sinners will not go unpunished and in judgment God will deal with all the unbelieving Jews and Gentiles alike. While we may feel the persecution of sinners, sinners will feel the wrath of God. Truly I would rather endure the temporal persecutions of man than the eternal judgment of the wrath of God.

Psalm 56:8 – Comfort, comfort is one attribute from God that we all need. Is it not a joy of soul when we have been hit by the sin and persecution of another when God comes alongside and begins to soften the event with His Mercy and Peace. All such wanderings are numbered by the LORD God. In this thought; while I do not like tumultuous events, I would desire to be like Korah in Psalm 42:1-11, see also Romans 8:31-39.

Psalm 58:9-11 – Confidence in God, not only in times of trouble but at all TIMES is FAITH IN ACTION, is your faith operating 24 hours a day, or are periods of time when your faith in the grace of God lags behind like a worn out sheep dog? I picture my faith “figuratively” as a young pup running before me, yes tripping from time to time but rebounding quickly and staying ahead of me, this I know because I have put my trust in God and in this TRUST I am not afraid, what could man possibly do me? Man can do nothing that God would not allow, therefore I am completely SAFE.

Psalm 56:12-13 – making a vow to God is binding and burdensome, I would rather give PRAISE to God. a vow is something for me to do a work that I may not be able to complete. Victory is Faith in action by allowing God to deliver my soul from death and to keep my feet from slipping or falling. In faith I can count on walking before the LORD God in the LIGHT of the living, thus I hope that your mind is fixed on God’s grace as you walk by faith TOO!

Comment: In enemy territory it is necessary to be silent; only military personnel understand this fully. To go undetected and yet to be prepared for battle should it happen is like the words of King David that are not normally read in Psalm 56. These are as much a part of scripture as is the thirteen verses following. His words read “To the Chief Musician. Set to ‘The silent Dove in Distant Lands’ a Michtam of David when the Philistines captured him in Gath”. Now you might be thinking; what is that? It is a song that was sung that even further developed Saul’s resentment of David which you can read beginning in 1 Samuel 18 through 19. This was a time in David’s life when both his homeland and the Philistines wanted David and his 400 mighty men dead.

Devotional: Psalm 56 – A literal understanding of the Living Word of God is necessary for all of God’s children; in this understanding, it becomes the only way we can apply the Word to our everyday experiences. Surely, most of us are not at war and most of us do not (as yet) have to look over our shoulder to keep from being blind sided by the enemy. But we do need to fully understand that the fallen world around us is watching, thus becoming a spiritual battle, see Ephesians 6:10-20.

Psalm 56:1-2 – If you allow yourself to think about this, you will be aware that the enemies of God are hounding the children of God at every opportunity. We need to monitor our words with the enemy since they are eager to chew them up and spit them back at us. What you may mean for good is trampled on, the enemy is eager to haunt and hound us daily. Our only resource is to call upon our merciful God who is “Surety for us” see Psalm 119:122. God is our only guarantee for victory.

Psalm 56:3-4 – how many times a day does fear approach us, the number can be more than we care to count on certain days. We must be willing to trust God in all of these moments and let me be specific; ALL, MEANS ALL! While it is good to get up in the morning and meditate and pray that we are going to trust God, it is still necessary to remind yourself at every fearful moment, “LORD, I am trusting you, I will praise your Word, I will not fear, in this; “what can man do to me?”

Psalm 56:5-6 – We must also understand that the spiritual battle is an “all day long” event” unbelieving people have only one agenda (even people we love but are unsaved) will twist our words. They may love us as well, but their thoughts which run in opposition to our thoughts are against us for one purpose. They are practicing evil, while we (hopefully) are practicing righteousness. Sadly, when we are not present or in their sight they gather together. They whisper and backbite against our relationship to God, in this they mark our steps, even set up stumbling blocks, lying in wait for our fall, we need at all times to be watchful.

Well this will be enough for now, I hope your day is pleasant and I hope your righteousness is not your own; notice Romans 13:11-14. And Jeremiah 23:6: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS!

Comment: If someone would ask us; “Do we live in the Light of the LORD?” if we were truthful, what would be our answer? Let me say up front… the Psalm writers did! Now we do not need to be a psalm writer, but it would help if we were a Psalm reader. For years I ignored the Psalms thinking that these were not important. Psalms to me were full of mourning and wrath, well who needs more mourning and wrath in one’s day? Is there not enough complaining daily and why be reminded of the complaints of the Old Testament saints! If this is your mindset or if there are other reasons why you do not read the Psalms let me say “O bosh!” God forbid such thinking. Wrap your soul around a Psalm or two each day, your soul will rejoice, it will be comforted and you will be able to meditate on Him who has redeemed you in time and is preparing you for eternity.

Devotional: Psalm 56 – I believe that there is not a day in our secular world that the saints of God are not tormented. We do not have to wait for a foreign enemy to overcome our homeland to be tormented, remember if you are saved by the grace of God and if your faith in God is being enriched by the Word of God then the land you live in is “enemy territory”.

Of the saints of the past (considering the old and new testaments) we can read from Hebrews 11:13-16, all of the dead saints of the past believed the promises of God and they were assured in that while seeing the results from afar, embraced the promises by faith and willing confessed these promises to us that in believing the promises, they were now STRANGERS AND PILGRAMS on the earth. If you know the Truth, then like these saints who have gone before us, our HOMELAND is now foreign to us and we are to be looking as they did; that is to desire a better country, a heavenly abode. 

Now note; Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them! Does this mean that God could be ashamed to be identified with us? I believe that it is clear that He would be for some and it would be those who are saved but have not “overcome” the world’s torment. Now if you do not understand, hang in there and I will seek to explain with the help of the Holy Spirit. If He is not in this, then there is little reason for you to read these devotionals.
