The Devotional – Lazy distraction
Comment: When is the last time you fixed your
eyes on scripture and thought intently over the words? Thinking and fixing one’s
mind on any subject is called contemplation and many who read the Holy Bible
fail to contemplate it at all. Our minds are busy with various thoughts that
have nothing to do with the context in front of our eyes. This is dangerous if
you are a child of God! It is like the times when your earthly father was
speaking to you and your mind was focused elsewhere. You did not hear a word
your father said, and in the same way, you do not hear what your Heavenly
Father says either. These days the average believer would rather be led by bit
and bridle, than to intently contemplate the love of God. To have this attitude
about the Word of God is to be willfully ignorant and willful ignorance is NOT
bliss.
Devotional: The failure to contemplate the Word
of God is a sin of indolence (lazy distraction), but look what happens when we
begin to contemplate on the love of God and His Character.
Blessed is
he whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute
iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones
grew old through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your Hand was
heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer, Psalm 32:1-4.
If our spirit is full of various idle thoughts while God’s Word is speaking to
us we are transgressing His Word and there is no forgiveness, but happy
(joyful) are those who heed His Word.
As David the
writer of this Psalm acknowledges his transgression (sin), we too must do the
same and God will forgive our iniquity (an unjust act).
For this
cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You, in a time when you may be found;
in a flood of great waters (tears from a contrite heart, or when surrounded by
trouble). Nothing and no one can harm us when God is our hiding place; He will preserve
us from ALL troubles throughout the day. I love to sing hymns, songs of
deliverance. When I am surrounded by these I am at peace with God (Selah).
When we
contemplate the Living Word of God we are continually instructed and taught by
God in the way we ought to go, as He guides us with His Watchful Eye. So we
MUST always contemplate His Word when we read it, we must stop being like the
horse or mule who has NO understanding, who must be led around by bit and
bridle. Otherwise “many sorrows” will fall upon the wicked; but he who trusts
in the LORD, MERCY shall surround him, therefore be glad and rejoice, you who
are righteous; and shout for joy, all of us who have an upright heart! My personal
contemplation of Psalm 32:1-11.
