The Devotional – The promise!

The Devotional – The promise!

Comment: Sometimes when I begin the devotional, I think to myself “I have nothing to say!” And yes that would be true if it were just me. Then I read my Bible, then I pray and seek the LORD and my goal to write becomes His goal to provide. What seemed impossible a moment before is now possible and in this my soul rejoices. Sometimes we forget that the method of provision and guidance in the Holy Scripture is more than human effort and commentary. The method of God to teach us TRUTH is and always will be the HOLY SPIRIT of God Himself. Jesus, after washing the feet of His disciples has a long conversation with them. The dialog leading to this discourse is a result of the disciples’ lack of understanding regarding Judas Iscariot, notice John 13:29, without the indwelling Holy Spirit no one can know the Truth.

Devotional: The TRUTH of God is through JESUS CHRIST, the WAY to God is through JESUS CHRIST and the LIFE of God is through JESUS CHRIST. Even said, Thomas said to Jesus, “LORD, we do not know where YOU are going and how can we KNOW the WAY?” John 14:1-6.

Spiritual Revelation is the only plausible answer and Jesus says plainly, “If you had known ME, you would have known My Father also and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.” Now His disciple Philip joins the dialog, “LORD show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” As Jesus continues His discourse you might think that He is seeking to get His disciples to believe in Him a second time, yet this is not the case at all, He is however seeking for them to believe the promise of the coming Holy Spirit.

They are following Jesus their Messiah, they have yet to trust Him for salvation so the information in this discourse continues through John 14 and 17 are a series of PROMISES regarding prayer, the HOLY SPIRIT and the indwelling of God the Father and Jesus Christ in His disciples. Notice the response of Judas (the son of James) “LORD how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world.”

Jesus begins His answer with LOVE, love is the motivation for everyone to keep God’s WORD, keeping God’s Word is the predetermined counsel of God the Father for everyone who comes home to God, as Jesus says; “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the WORD which You hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent me.” John 14:19-24, the whole discourse to this point is about the promised indwelling of God the Holy Spirit who will indwell all who KNOW and LOVE God through the SON.

This is the GRACE of God, His Love for you and me is always offered, it is the FIRST attribute we see in God and it is the Holy Spirit that provides this guidance of peace and opportunity to TRUST God. Love, joy and peace for the first time in life is perfected in believing in Jesus Christ. Yet not one of us, like His disciples will understand if we are not willing to receive the PROMISED GRACE work of the Holy Spirit.

So I have said all of this, to say the following. The Spirit of TRUTH is God the Holy Spirit, it is He alone that guides us to TRUTH. Truth can be separated from God by human commentary, thus we MUST be careful, we MUST rely on the HOLY SPIRIT. “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into ALL TRUTH; for he will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak and He will tell you things to come.” There are many who fail this promise simply because they fail to love God and rely on the promise of Jesus regarding the Holy Spirit.
