Thought for the Day – 125 – Faith and Rest
Proverbs 4:1-27 – Many
times in Proverbs I am reminded that King David took care to teach his son
Solomon foundational truth from the Old Testament scripture. Now some of us
would think that this is from Genesis to Malachi and that would be error. The available
Word of God in those days was the first five books that we have today. Genesis,
Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy; notice Deuteronomy 29:29
Comments and challenges
The other morning on
our way to church, my wife saw a very large bird; at first we thought it was a
turkey. Turkeys are very popular here in New England. The bird was scurrying
away from the road and into the field, we both agreed that it was a turkey, but
you know how that goes… with a little thought and much imagination we
determined that the bird was too big to be a mere turkey so we added the word
BUZZARD. “Yea we agreed as we traveled further down the road and away from the
sighting that indeed it was a turkey buzzard. We have turkey buzzards in New
England too!
Now what is the rub?
In gospel of Mark (I can be skeptical of what I read) and I think it is the way
in which he writes that causes me this confusion. The best way to clear up any
confusion in the Living Bible is to see if it is documented somewhere else. The
Holy Bible is a perfect documentary on itself and it is not necessary to be
verbatim, but it is necessary for the other reference to agree.
Like in my
conversation with my wife about “big bird” our stories differed slightly but we
did agree. The bird was big, black and had a little red “something or other”
hanging from its beak and this was enough to say it was a turkey. The rest
could go either way.
Mark 1:29 – Now as
soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and
Andrew, with James and John. Mark 1:30 – But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick
with a fever, and they told Him (Jesus) about her at once. Mark 1:31 – So He
came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left
her and she served them.
Matthew 8:14 – Now
when Jesus had come into Peter’s house, He saw his wife’s mother lying sick
with a fever. Matthew 8:15 – and He (Jesus) touched her hand, and the fever
left her. Then she arose and served them.
Also we can note
that Mark and Matthew agree in the following few verses regarding the healing
of many folks after the sun went down on the Sabbath day of rest. Now in just
these two events we have a good witness that Jesus Christ the Son of the Living
God had power and authority on this earth to SPEAK pure doctrine, to CAST out
the presence of demonic power and with a WORD heal the sick. But there was
another witness to this event recorded by Doctor Luke who wrote of this account
in Luke 8:38-41.
The gospel accounts
of Jesus are TRUE… for me; this is a comforting rest. There is no longer a need
to go searching for truth. The Jews were looking for Messiah and Matthew
presents to the Jew their King. Mark saw the LORD Jesus as the Servant as in
Zechariah 3:8 and Luke saw the LORD as human and as God in One Person. Zechariah
6:12. Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 and
have you noticed Romans 10:14-21? Verse 17 is surrounded by the Old Testament
Living word of God.
Lastly!!! WHAT? The
apostle Peter was MARRIED? I wonder if that rocks the papal seat of some
churches?
