Victory Villa, I have written of this place before but I was
reminded today of that place in Rota, Spain. Whenever the submarine I was on
was in Rota I would spend my off time in the Villa with the servicemen and
women who came from many military areas nearby. It is still a very active
ministry reaching out, not only to the military personnel but also to their
families. It never mattered where you were from or what nationality you were, Gus
like Jesus; respected your faith in God. Gordon “Gus” Gustafson was the
administrator at that time in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I believe he and
his family were transfer to Germany sometime in 1981. Looking at Facebook this
evening I read where his wife June now 91 is recovering from a broken hip. Her
daughter is at her bedside and they are singing… His Eye is on the sparrow and
I know He’s watching me! My thought of sharing this with you is simply that you
might lift the family up in prayer and thank you.
Challenge:
John 4:1-11 – The Pharisees were a torment for the
LORD from the very beginning of His Judean ministry. The wedding feast miracle
and the visit by Nicodemus did not go unnoticed since Nicodemus at this point
in time may not have believed in Him. His visit with Jesus at night is seen as
hiding from the public eye and not primarily to believe in Him. So the LORD
returned again to Galilee, but because of the pressure coming from the
Pharisees, Jesus chose the longer route through Samaria.
We can see from scripture that Jesus and His disciple
entered Samaria near the place where Jacob’s well was located. This was not a
short cut and if you know the Old Testament you know that this is the same
Jacob whose brother was Esau and their father was Isaac. Isaac’s father was
Abraham. Jesus and His disciples were hungry and thirsty and it was almost
noon. Jesus is alone at the well and a woman from the city Sychar came to draw
some water from the well. Now the disciples had left Jesus alone to go into the
city to purchase food.
Having nothing to contain water from the well, Jesus asked
the woman for a drink of water. The woman replied “How is it that You being a
Jew, ask of me a Samaritan woman for a drink?” She asked this question because
the Jews did not regard the Samaritan people as people to associate or make
dealings with, but despised them as half-breeds. The answer to the woman’s
question is very unique.
“If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you,
‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you Living
Water.” Question: How would you have answered Jesus at that moment in time? Her
answer is as keen as the LORD’s question. “Well is deep and you’ve nothing to
draw with, where then do you get this living water? Are you greater than our
father Jacob, who gave us this well, he even drank from it himself as well as
his sons and livestock?”
There is a lot I wish to cover and I am running out of time,
so I will leave you in suspense, of course if you know the events of that day
in the life of Jesus on earth than you are well ahead of those who don’t. God
loves all people, even the Samaritans and this we will see and much more.
