Comment: Waking
with the family is forgotten by most these days; I remember as a young person
that my parents would walk a lot. For those early years that I remember, I can
recall walking in the evening through neighborhoods and downtown. My
grandparents were walkers too and sometimes we would walk with them. I do not
remember that we went any place in particular, but if we were in the ‘downtown’
area we would sometimes buy a milkshake or two and share. Life was simpler
those days. I believe that not only was it good exercise for the physical body,
but walking was also good for one’s soul; in the following way; walking taught
us to love one another walking taught us countenance and understanding (light)
or like-mindedness, and lastly walking taught us wisdom by listening to the
stories of our parents or grandparents as they remembered some of the history
of their earlier years.
Devotional: Ephesians 5:1-21 – The apostle Paul via God
the Holy Spirit uses “walking” as a metaphor to teach the children of God (you
and me) how to live as children of God. we are no longer children of ‘wrath’ we
are now cleansed of our past life of sin and death. In the first three chapters,
we are introduced to the doctrines. Teachings of redemption, grace through
faith, the blood of Christ, the Peace of Christ, His Headship as the
Cornerstone of Faith, the Mystery of this dispensation, the purpose of the
Mystery and how to appreciate the Church, which is the Mystery.
Now in the remaining chapters
of Ephesians we are taught to walk in Christ. We are to walk with God our
Father in the Light of His Love, through the Wisdom provided in the first three
chapters. If we choose to disregard this teaching all blessings available to us
– in Christ will be missed because we have failed to be Imitators of God. Now
you may be thinking, this is absurd, why should anyone want to imitate God? Did
we miss the ‘comment’ above? Now you may not have gone on walks with your mom
and dad, or even your grandparents, but no doubt whether you like it or not you
voluntarily imitate them daily, and you know their past history.
We are now adopted into the
family of God, Romans 8:17; His Spirit now bears witness to our spirit that we
are children of the Living God and if we are children (the if in this verse
literally means (it is true)) then we are heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together
with Him. The context of this one verse is Romans 8:12-17. Now we are to imitate
God as dear children. Most of us shy away from the thought because we
understand that our earthy body is shameful and sinful, but guess what? The Spirit
of God who dwells in our soul desires to revive our soul to it’s original
likeness (Genesis 1:26-28). While we cannot, nor should we try to clean up our
sinful flesh, we should be diligent to know and walk in truth. (2 Timothy
2:15).
