A Daily Devotional – The Wisdom of God – The Eternal Word

Comment: Today it is convenient, that if we are on the road and thirsty, to stop at the local ‘convenient’ store and purchase a bottle of water. Once there we may add to the water, candy, chips or any other item that tickles our palate at that moment. This temporal condition in life may be avoided, even ignored and in the case of water, could turn out to be life threatening by becoming dehydrated. This is critical if you are traveling long distances and need to stay alert. Life for most of us is a long distance. Moses explains that God has provided for man to live seventy years and by reason of physical strength to the age of eighty, see Psalm 90:10. This temporal life has blessing, but it is also filled with labor and sorrow.

Devotional: The LORD God who created us, created us to live forever; in other words, it was not God’s original purpose for man to live but seventy or eighty years. Notice in Genesis 1:26 that God said, “Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness” (God’s likeness and image is eternal). As you know, man failed the image and likeness of God by SIN, now all die just as Adam, see Genesis 5:1-5.

By contrast we can maintain a temporal human life for seventy or eight years by treating our human life with good physical exercise and proper eating and drinking habits, but against the backdrop of eternity what can you or I do to obtain and maintain eternal life? Can we; like our physical needs, buy eternal life? How much is the water of eternal life? Where is the store that sells eternal life, is that store convenient to you and me? What is the expense, can we as temporal humans afford to buy life eternal? Even the most naïve know the answer. But see Isaiah 55:1-3 and 6-13.

1 "Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.
2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
3 Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you-- The sure mercies of David.

6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord.
9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
10 "For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater,
11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it
