The Devotional
– 1489 – The Pure Light of God’s Word
Psalm
119:105-112 – Your word is a lamp to my feet and
a light to my path. I have sworn and confirmed that I will keep Your righteous
judgments. I am afflicted very much; revive me, O Lord, according to Your word.
Accept, I pray, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O Lord, and teach me Your
judgments. My life is continually in my hand, yet I do not forget Your law. The
wicked have laid a snare for me, yet I have not strayed from Your precepts. Your
testimonies I have taken as a heritage forever, for they are the rejoicing of
my heart. I have inclined my heart to perform Your statutes Forever, to the
very end.
Comments and Challenges:
Most people who have tasted the good word of God and the
powers of the age to come (Heb 6:5) understand that it is only God’s Word as a
Light that guides them along the way. The psalmist explains that with the Word
of God as a revealing light in this world of darkness, we cannot stumble or
lose our way. Yet it may be that we as those who have trusted or tasted that
the LORD is good, find ourselves stumbling and lost at various times or seasons.
I believe you may know the answer to this even before I
can write of it, since if you have read this section of Psalm 119 before; you
may have noticed these words, “I am afflicted very much; revive me, O LORD,
according to Your Word”. Knowing that affliction is always in our pathway and
knowing that we have this understanding, even more understanding than some of our
teachers we can become somewhat “puffed up” (proud) in this frame of mind. It is
in these moments we fail the Light, it does not fail us.
We become “churchy” and lay aside being “saintly” the
self-affliction or fleshly attitude of living out of the “gut” or “gutting it
out” as one pastor/friend used to say is SIN and in this there is darkness and
stumbling even though we might have the Word of God in hand daily. You say;
well that is not possible, but may I remind you that the Corinthian Church was
reprimanded by the apostle Paul for several sins that were ongoing in the
church family. Some have counted the number of sins within the Corinthian church
to be more than sixty-four.
Whether we are a company of one or a congregation of
many, God is not interested in our outward appearance, He is only interested in
His Son’s appearance in us and if we fail to put on the LORD Jesus; Romans
13:14 we are then in need of a revival like that of the psalmist who expresses
to God these words; “I am afflicted very much; revive me, O LORD, according to
Your Word.
Also I might add this: some liberal folks are of the
opinion that the words of the Holy Bible were written over thousands of years
and while the words were of importance at that time in history that the Bible
is not relevant today, these people include the New Testament writings too
since these are two thousand years old. To these liberal religions the Bible is
not good news but old news. The Bible then becomes a “platform” only to build
systems of works that lead straight to “hell”. If you have strayed into this
camp of foolishness then I say shame on you for your liberal take on the
Kingdom of God.
The psalmist says in the final section of the “nun”
file that a right relationship with God is being taught daily by God and that
our lives are continually in His Hands. Religion is wickedness that lays traps
for those who are foolish. Like the psalmist; do not stray from the precepts
and testimonies of God; these are our inheritance, a heritage forever. While we
have only a taste of the good things to come we need only to remember that the
taste will one day be full and this should rejoice our “soul” continually. We so
need to bend our soul in the direction of the Kingdom of God and we need to
stop bending our ear to the foolishness of religion and of the world.
