Comment: The first twelve chapters of the Gospel of John record all
but one of the recorded miracles of our LORD. The final miracle is His
resurrection from the tomb where He laid, His rising from that tomb fulfills all
of the Old Testament prophesies regarding His death and resurrection. His first
mention of His death and resurrection (see John 2:19) is in the beginning of
His earthly ministry and provides insight to those wonderful moments on the
shores of Tiberias (Galilee); see John 2:13-22. Reading this section reveals the
revelation of God to His disciples in John 21 that the Man on the beach is the
Messiah.
Devotional: John 20:30-31
through John 21:1-14 The last miracle is surrounded by the
signs and wonders that occurred after His immediate resurrection, so the
question one might ask; “Are not signs and wonders miracles too?” I think not,
since a miracle is an event designed by God to bring mankind to the revelation
of TRUTH. Signs and wonders are like the results of the miracle event; like
that of ‘April showers bring May flowers’.
Notice in John 21, this is now the third time that
Jesus showed Himself “risen” to His disciples, as all of them returned to the
work they did before they were called by Jesus to follow Him. But without Jesus
even their old trade of fishing was EMPTY, they caught nothing. Yet when Jesus
appeared, the result of His resurrection provided a full net of fish, one
hundred fifty-three fish.
Also, the result of His resurrection provided the
morning breakfast, and the words of the apostle John to the crew on the boat. “It
is the LORD!” The result of the presence of Christ and the words of John
reveals that they believed, they KNEW that He was and is the Messiah/Jesus. Do
you know the LORD as His disciples did that day? I hope you do! The signs and wonders of the risen LORD are as fresh for you and me as these were for His disciples. You know He is the Christ, so believe in Him and be delivered from this adulterous generation.
We will look more intently to the final nine chapters
of John’s gospel in the days ahead.
