I thought I would nail down the distance from Bethany to the baptismal sight
where John baptized the LORD Jesus. I was not successful and it must not be
important as it seems obscure even with Wikipedia. Bethabara is used by some
religions and sects, and both Bethany and Bethabara have long histories of
collectively being the same place on the map. The town was the home of Mary,
Martha and Lazarus. Jesus visited them often as they were close friends. If you
have close friends then you know firsthand the kind of relationship that grows
between good friends. In today’s world economy, friendships are hard to come
by, it seems we have lost faith in humanity, maybe this is because we have lost
our way in trusting both God and man, or Thee God/man. We have pastors
in churches all across the nation who do not trust their congregations and
congregations who do not submit to the authority of Scripture or church
leadership because they do not understand the word - submission.
Devotional: John
11:1-16 – Well some may say that even among the disciples of Jesus there was
confusion, bickering and maybe a lack of trust. Also there was this sort of murmuring
among the disciples at various times, notice the statement in verse 12
regarding the statement of Jesus in verse 11. The comment in verse 12 is
collective, not singular so they had to agree with each other that they did not
understand the LORD. Verse 13 verifies the confusion, does it not.
This identifies a very important characteristic about
the LORD, His comments and conversations were driven by the Will of God the
Father and revealed by the indwelling Holy Spirit; John 6:63 reveals that the
Words that Jesus spoke first were spirit and they are life and when He is not
understood, He spoke plainly. For this moment in time, Jesus said plainly; “Lazarus
is dead.” See John 10:15-16, notice that Thomas is completely beside himself,
he did not come up with this idea solely on his own.
Now I see in this context that the LORD Jesus is still
dealing with the lack of faith, or unbelief within His group of disciples. Sometimes
we seem to think that all is well with them, but remember we have Judas within
the fellowship; see John 6:70-71. We will see more on Monday, in the meantime,
go to church, study to show yourself approved of God a workman who does not
need to be ashamed when the Word of God is diligently and rightly studied, see
2 Timothy 2:15.
