A Daily Devotional – Psalm 119:129-136 – Personal Meditation
Comment: Often we seek a literal understanding
of the ongoing love and mercy of God. An academic exercise is not always the
best route. God is a Spirit and we ought to worship Him in that way; see John
4:23-24. Yes! We ought to be seeking a personal and spiritual relationship with
God daily, one that is unceasing. On the other side of this personal
relationship is the hope of advancing in Christ and going on to maturity (see
Romans 13, 2 Timothy and Hebrews 6) that is to study His Word. Both
Spirituality and maturity in Christ are needed by every child of God. Personal
Meditation is not possible with God if we are not in the Spirit and without the
study of God’s Word in our soul, we will have nothing to talk to God about
except the mundane life of struggling to survive in the flesh.
Devotional: Please
notice what the psalmist says in our next eight verses. “Your testimonies are
wonderful; therefore, my SOUL keeps them.” How would the psalmist know this, if
he did not study God’s Word and how would he not express this personally to God
if this truth were not in his soul?
“The entrance of Your Words gives Light; it gives
understanding to the simple.” Another statement, but one packed with the
knowledge of God in his soul. The psalmist is providing his readers with an
understanding of how we transfer Truth from an academic study of God’s Word to
an active life of prayer and meditation with God in the Spirit.
The world around us is dark and dead, the study of the
Word of God is opening the door of our soul; the mouth of our soul pants like
the deer for water at the brook (Psalm 42:1-2). Our soul is ALWAYS longing for
the commandments of God. The psalmist is not relating to God about his physical
wellbeing, but he is looking and longing for God’s mercy, that is a spiritual
expression. We do not experience God’s mercy in our flesh, we experience His
mercy in daily Spiritual Meditation with Him, the flesh may benefit, but not
always. It is God’s normal way with His children, that is those who understand
His Name (Isaiah 9:6 and John 3:16).
“Direct my steps by Your Word, and let no iniquity
have dominion (control) me”. The psalmist commands God to act on His behalf, he
does not do this from knowledge out of his hip pocket. He calls on God from his
soul, where our love for God and by God resides. Redemption in every way of
life is the standing statute of our Wonderful, Councilor and Mighty God who
loves us, even while we were yet, sinners – Christ died for us. Isaiah 9:6 and Romans
5:8, is our Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.
When the face of God is our Light and when He is
teaching us His statutes our soul is experiencing the greatest joy possible in
this life we live. When we see others, who say they are children of God but,
but reject the law of God, our tears do run in streams since we see their
darkness.
