A Daily Devotional – Psalm 119:97-104 – Personal Meditation
Comment: There are a lot of things in life
that can be consuming; work, family, sports, hobbies; are the four major. No
one would argue that family and work are necessary, while sports and hobbies
ought to be the lessor of priority. Our society today has turned this upside
down, we shirk work and desert our family and in this we pat each other on the
back while betting on the seasonal sport or competing in some amateur sport of
our liking. Then by default we whittle away the rest of the time with a hobby
or two. There is a reason! Would you care to know what that reason is? The
writer of Psalm 119 in this next section clearly gives us the answer. “Oh, how
I love Your law, I meditate on it all the day long” verse 97. What law of God
could be loved this much that it would right the capsized ship? It is the
limitless power of God who created the heavens and earth. This power over
creation is not ancient, it is eternally present.
Devotional: The
psalmist has identified in many verses up to this point that the laws and
statutes of God are so powerful that the just reward for understanding these
are wisdom and knowledge. These make the one who meditates on them daily, wiser
than his or her enemies. When we meditate these pillars of God’s sustaining
power these become vitally effective in our daily life with the people around
us.
Meditation on God provides us with faith in God that
exceeds worldly wisdom that would subvert or teach us to ignore the statutes of
God. God provides grace and mercy from the knowledge of His laws that exceed
the unbelieving elders of the land we live in. In obedience to God, we obey His
precepts rather than the precepts of fallen man, in faith and with God’s help,
we keep our feet from the evil path.
The law of God as we have said previously, exceeds
everything created including our life in the everyday world around us. Even
when we depart the path He has given us to walk, His law of moral conduct
exceeds our temporal conduct. While saddened yesterday over the moral decay of
our society; I am greatly encouraged today. By this and I seek to do justly, to
love mercy and walk humbly before my God, (Micah 6:8).
Abiding in the law of God I agree with the psalmist. “LORD.
How sweet are Your Words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. With Your
Word LORD, I gain understanding and from your precepts, statutes and judgments I
learn to abhor every wrong path. Praise the LORD, O my soul and again, Praise
the LORD.
