A Daily Devotional – Preserving – The Eternal Word (7)
Comment: When we are downtrodden (depressed)
our eyes are usually ‘downcast’, our thoughts are selfishly inward and our
activity to live is idle. The unknown writer of Psalm 121 is having just such a
day and he is focused on finding relief. He has a question, a wise one in fact
so let’s read the question, “From whence comes my help?” the word ‘whence’ is
unique as it ponders or meditates a specific answer; like what place, source or cause will provide
a proper solution. Note the psalmist has lifted his eyes to the hills. In a
depressed state of mind, the beauty of Creation is dulled, but not distorted. Notice
“my help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth!” Verses 1 and 2.
Devotional: Of course, the writer is Jewish,
praise God; his nationality means that he is God’s agent to the rest of the
world to testify of his personal faith in the grace of God. This man’s
depression does not last long; notice!
He (God)
will not allow your foot to be moved (literally – slip). He who KEEPS you will
not slumber. Behold (Look), He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber, nor
sleep. (God is eternally awake, meaning God is omnipresent, omnipotent and
omniscient).
No more
depression in this man, now he is a teacher of Truth; notice verse 5b-6; The
LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor
the moon by night. The LORD provides protection twenty-four hours a day, in
other words; NOTHING will happen any of His children at any time that is beyond
His Will for us.
The LORD’s
protection for us is directed at preserving us physically, mentally and spiritually.
God alone is our ‘keeper and protector’ His love for His children is to
preserve our SOUL from all EVIL. Evil is the destroyer of life, liberty and
soul; we have no ability to protect ourselves from evil; notice again.
The LORD shall preserve (keep) you’re
going out and you’re coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.
The next
time you feel depression creeping in, turn to the Creator of the heaven and the
earth. Read Psalm 121 if need be, or one of the other Psalms from 120 to 134.
